New mural outside Saskatoon’s Confederation Mall aims ‘to brighten people’s days’

Constructed over half a century ago, Confederation Mall stands as a recognizable landmark in Saskatoon, but it has recently undergone a transformative artistic rejuvenation. Invited during the waning days of summer, local artist Josh Jacobson brought his palette, ladder, and creative vision to breathe fresh life into the mall. Over three weeks, he adorned a vast 1,200-square-foot wall across from the mall’s parking lot with a vivid array of colors, graphic-inspired shapes, and fluid lines seamlessly connecting each panel. To Jacobson, murals are the most accessible form of art, capable of altering one’s perspective and inspiring contemplation. In a unique twist, he incorporated augmented reality into his masterpiece, inviting viewers to scan QR codes, causing segments of the mural to leap off the wall, shape-shift, or soar overhead, all while allowing for a broader evolution of the artwork over time. Engaging with passerby and embracing the neighborhood’s diverse perspectives, Jacobson’s mural at Confederation Mall exemplifies a burgeoning acceptance of street art in Saskatoon, aiming to bring unexpected, inclusive, and uplifting art to all.
